As we all know that CyanogenMod is one of the most popular and most widely used custom ROMs in the Android world. This ROM has a set of options and a level of customization that is not found in manufacturers’ stock ROMs. However, it is true that the company said that the source code will remain available to anyone who wants to develop their own ROM, but CyanogenMod already has a replacement called Lineage OS. The company Cyanogen Inc. (cyngn), responsible for Cyanogen OS, announced that it will shut down all its services and development for Android ROMs (both nightlies versions which were marked as stable), as from 31st December 2016. Without wasting much time, a group of developers who are part of the project CyanogenMod, created and have announced a fork of CyanogenMod, which they named LineageOS (Lineage Android OS Distribution). Here is what they stated on their official blog:- “Yes, this is us. You’ve probably read the news articles today. If you haven’t, please see the following:-
Cyanogen services shutting down A fork in the road
So, yes, this is us. LineageOS will be a continuation of what CyanogenMod was. To quote Andy Rubin, this is the definition of open. A company pulling their support out of an open source project does not mean it has to die. Check back for more information on Tuesday.”
